전통 공예 특강

처마에 달려 바람이 불면 맑은 소리를 내는 풍경, 완곡한 곡선을 그리며 올라간 네 개의 다리가 받치고 있는 소반, 밭지도 뭉툭하지도 않게 완만한 선을 그리는 버선… 한국 문화의 일상에서 볼 수 있는 사물이지만, 그 속에는 우리나라만의 단정하고 은은한 아름다움이 담겨 있습니다.

레딩한글학교에서는 소소한 사물에도 은근한 미적 감각을 담은 한국의 문화를 직접 만들어 보며 더욱 가깝게 체험했습니다. 광주의 예술인협회에서 공예 창작 활동을 하는 조경화 작가와 임정하 작가를 초청하여 도자기 풍경, 나무 소반 그리고 버선 도어벨 제작 활동을 했습니다.

풍경 아래에 여러개의 도자기 조각과 나무 조각을 매듭으로 엮어 나만의 문구를 적어 넣기, 서툴지만 바늘에 실을 꿰어 작은 버선을 만드는 바느질을 하고 그 안에 솜을 넣은 후 매듭과 방울을 달아 버선 도어벨을 완성하기, 나무 조각을 맞춰 소반을 만들고 원하는 색감이 나올 때까지 윷색깔을 덧칠하여 나무 소반 만들기 등 세 가지 활동을 하면서 참가자들은 창작의 기쁨과 표현의 즐거움을 느꼈습니다.

처음 해보는 작업인데도 어려워 하지 않고, 주저하지 않고 적극적으로 참여하는 모습도 예뻤지만, 집중력을 갖고 끝까지 작업한 후에 각자 자신의 작품에 완성하는 얼굴은 더욱 반짝반짝 빛이 났습니다.

다양한 미의 가치는 책을 통해서, 미술관과 박물관에 전시된 작품을 통해서도 배울 수 있지만, 직접 만들어 보는 공예 작업을 통해 학생들의 사고는 더욱 확장되었을 것으로 생각합니다.

여분의 활동으로 제공된 캘리그래피 꽃엽서에 ‘꽃처럼 아름다워라’, ‘봄햇살처럼 따뜻한 봄날에’ 등 고운 한글 문구를 쓰고 말린 꽃을 붙이며 마무리한 이 날의 전통 공예 특강은 참가한 학생들과 학부모님 모두에게 특별한 문화 체험으로 새겨질 것입니다.

Objects such as wind chimes that create a clear sound when the wind blows, small wooden tables supported by four elegantly curved legs, and Busun socks with gentle, flowing lines—these are everyday items in Korean culture, yet they embody a unique sense of refined and subtle beauty.

In Reading Korean School, students and parents had the opportunity to experience Korean culture more closely by creating these aesthetically rich objects themselves. Inviting ceramic artist Kyunghwa Cho and woodworking artist Jeongha Im from the Gwangju Artists’ Association, the workshop featured hands-on activities such as making ceramic wind chimes, wooden tables, and sock-shaped doorbells.

The students engaged in various creative activities: tying ceramic and wooden pieces to the bottom of a wind chime with knots while writing personal messages, threading needles and sewing small socks filled with cotton before adding knots and bells to complete the sock-shaped doorbell, and assembling wooden pieces to craft a small table, carefully layering traditional Korean dye until achieving the desired colour. Through these three activities, they discovered the joy of creativity and the pleasure of self-expression.

Even though it was their first time trying these crafts, they showed no hesitation or difficulty, actively participating with enthusiasm. Their dedication and concentration were admirable, and their faces shone with pride and excitement as they completed their unique creations.

While the values of beauty can be learned through books, museums, and galleries, engaging in hands-on craftwork allows for even deeper and more expansive thinking.

As an additional activity, students were given calligraphy flower postcards to decorate with dried flowers and write beautiful Korean phrases such as “May you bloom like a flower” and “A warm spring day like the spring sunshine.”

This special traditional craft workshop will remain a meaningful cultural experience for both the students and their parents.
