< Celebrating Chuseok Together with Traditional Korean Sweet ‘Yakgwa’ >

Following a summer of visits to Korea, family holidays, and well-earned rest and relaxation, September 2026 marked the beginning of a new academic year.

This term, we are delighted to welcome new pupils and a new teacher to the newly established Nara Class at Reading Korean School. Settling into both British and Korean school life can be exceptionally daunting for young children. Nonetheless, our new pupils have adapted remarkably well from their very first lesson. We are incredibly proud of all the Nara Class pupils!

For our second lesson of the autumn term, the entire school came together to celebrate Chuseok, one of Korea’s most significant traditional festivals. Each class explored the culture and customs associated with Chuseok. In particular, we gathered together to make yakgwa, a traditional Korean honey pastry often associated with chaeryesang (a ceremonial table set with food to honour ancestors).

Traditionally, making yakgwa involves frying the dough and soaking it in a honey-based syrup. However, in accordance with school safety guidelines, we used a child-friendly, no-heat method that enabled every class to participate directly by kneading the dough and shaping their own pastries.

The children showed boundless imagination, producing everything from the classic floral designs commonly found in shops to delicate patterns made using traditional dasik moulds, as well as uniquely inventive castle-shaped creations.

While learning about the history of yakgwa, pupils also discovered the fascinating linguistic origin of the common Korean idiom “이 정도면 약과지”, which is comparable to the English expression “It could be much worse”. It was a thoroughly educational and delightful experience, successfully combining cultural heritage with creativity and enjoyment.

In October, Reading Korean School will continue to provide engaging Korean language lessons while beginning preparations for our annual end-of-year performances.

We wish all our pupils at Reading Korean School, and especially those taking their first steps on their journey in the Nara Class, continued growth, happiness and success throughout the term.
