열흘 전부터, 레딩의 가족들은 5월 24일 토요일의 일기 예보를 하루에도 몇번씩 확인했습니다. 이 날은 일년에 한 번 있는 레딩한글학교 운동회가 있기 때문입니다. ‘우천시 취소라고 했는데, 비가 오면 어쩌지…?’ 걱정이 되어서, 비만 안 오면… 땅만 젖지 않으면…의 각오로 만반의 준비를 하며 토요일 아침을 맞았습니다.

학교에 모여 2교시 한글 수업을 마치고 향한 공원에는 이미 졸업생들이 하얀 천막을 쳐 놓았고, 학부모님들은 돗자리와 도시락, 다양한 간식을 준비해서 모였습니다. 날씨 걱정이 기우였다고 여길만큼, 운동회 내내 햇볕이 강하지 않고, 비도 오지 않는 아주 적당하게 쾌청한 오후였습니다.

손 안대고 과자 따먹기, 신발 던지기, 공 위아래로 전달하기를 하며 신나게 뛴 1부 운동회를 마치고 풍성히 준비된 도시락을 먹었습니다. 점심 식사 후에는 수건 돌리기를 재해석한 인형 돌리기를 시작으로 판 뒤집기, 이어달리기로 운동회 열기를 더했습니다. 운동회 내내 학부모님들은 아이들을 응원하고 사진을 찍으시며 아이들보다 더 즐겼습니다.

편이 하나로 묶일 수 있는 건 뭐니뭐니 해도 줄다리기! 아이들과 어른들이 각각 청군과 홍군을 위한 줄다리기 대항을 했는데, 영차,영차 힘을 모으는 여러사람의 구령이 한 목소리로 들렸습니다.

한글학교 운동회는, 학생들에게는 한국 놀이의 재미와 함께 팀을 위해 뛰는 협동심을, 학부모님에게는 어린시절의 유쾌한 추억과 서로 나누는 정을 느끼게 하는 행복한 시간입니다. 레딩한글학교에서는 이렇게 또 한 번의 즐거운 토요일을 만들어 갑니다.

For ten days leading up to the event, families of Reading Korean School checked the weather forecast for Saturday, 24th May several times a day. It was the day of the annual sports day, and everyone was hoping for clear skies. “What if it rains…? They did say it would be cancelled if it rained…” With this concern in mind, everyone welcomed Saturday morning fully prepared, thinking, “As long as it doesn’t rain… even if the ground’s just a little wet, we’ll be fine.”

After completing the second period Korean lesson at school, students headed to the park, where alumni had already set up white tents. Parents arrived with picnic mats, lunch boxes, and a variety of snacks. It turned out the worries about the weather were unnecessary—it was a perfectly pleasant afternoon, with no rain and just the right amount of sun.

The first half of the sports day was filled with excitement: catching snacks without using hands, shoe throwing, and passing a ball up and down. After working up an appetite, everyone enjoyed a hearty lunch. The afternoon continued with more activities, starting with a reinterpretation of the traditional handkerchief game using a soft toy, then a cone-flipping game, and a relay race to keep the energy going. Throughout the event, parents were just as, if not more, enthusiastic than the children—cheering them on and taking photos.

The highlight of team spirit came with the tug-of-war! Children and adults alike formed into the Blue and Red teams, pulling together with shouts of “Young-Cha, Young-Cha!” as voices united in rhythm.

The Korean School sports day is a joyful occasion that brings more than just fun. For students, it’s a chance to experience traditional Korean games and the importance of teamwork. For parents, it’s a nostalgic reminder of their own childhood and a chance to share warmth and laughter. This is how Reading Korean School continues to create happy Saturdays, time and again.
